GLANCING BACK over the last two chapters, I realise now, ten years later, that what seemed incredibly taut and immensely exciting to me then, will probably seem to you, who read the story many times before, tedious and prolix. But I want you to bear with me, because even lengthiness and boredom may help you to appreciate the incredible frustration we had to endure during each of our periods in captivity. We were not merely bored, we were maddened by the knowledge that we could no longer do anything about our fate. We were toys for their pleasure.
